In honor of New Moon being released on November 20, we’re spotlighting a charitable effort that Team Edward, Team Switzerland and especially Team Jacob can agree on. Although I’ve always been an animal lover, I’ve recently discovered a new appreciation for wolves ;) Enjoy learning about the species and how you can help protect them in the US – our Charities of the Month for November are all about saving the wolves!

Image

The wolf is a remarkable species that symbolizes all things natural, wild and free! Wolves once reigned atop diverse ecosystems across North America, helping to maintain nature’s critical balance on this continent.

Unfortunately, millions were trapped, poisoned, or shot during the first half of the 20th century, victims of unfounded fear and ignorance. Ultimately, nearly all wolves were exterminated throughout the lower 48 states. Fortunately for the wolf, increased attention to the environment in the 60s and 70s helped bring about the Endangered Species Act. Shortly after the Act's passage in 1973, the wolf was identified as endangered or threatened in the lower 48 states and declared a candidate for species recovery.

Although there have been numerous success stories of wolf recovery thanks to the Endangered Species Act, they still remain absent in the Northeast and other areas where suitable habitats remain, and continued attention is needed to protect these gains and to ensure similar successes in other regions.

National Wildlife Federation – Gray Wolf

The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) works to inspire Americans to protect wildlife for our children's future. The gray wolf is just one of the animals that NWF is focused on protecting, and they offer a wonderful way for anyone to get involved! With your support, NWF can continue to spearhead wolf recovery efforts across North America.

Adopt a Wolf
With a donation of $20 or more, you can symbolically adopt a gray wolf! With each adoption, you receive a certificate of adoption, an 11” x 14” poster, and additional items depending on your level of donation. If you donate $30 or more, you receive your own adorable plush member of the wolf pack!

Visit this page to learn about the different levels of adoption available.

Yeah! Love this charity idea- I've donated to various charities, and I always alocate to the wolf protection programs.

I travel to Wyoming every summer (except last summer- impending childbirth really got in the way  ) to take photographs and one of my favorite things is to watch the wolves, especially the Lamar Valley's Slough Creek pack. I still remember the first time I saw a wolf in the wild the summer after they reintroduced the wolves into Yellowstone Park. Black wolf on the road into the Slough Creek campground, standing on top of a rock looking down at me. I was all alone, it was the most terrifying moment of my life and the most exhilirating! It was like my favorite place in the world was suddenly complete. I can't wait until next summer when I will take my LO (who will be one) to Yellowstone for the first time. The success of the reintroduction program in the greater Yellowstone area is a great example of how animals can thrive even after long absences.

The NPS site has some great informationabout the Yellowstone wolves if anyone is interested in learning more about the reintroduction program that was implemented. http://www.nps.gov/yell/naturescience/wolves.htm

Okay, I've gone off on enough of a tangent! You guys have just picked a cause that is so near and dear to my heart! Maybe my love for the wolves is why I'm such a team Jacob/Wolf Pack girl!

One last thing. Here is a shot of a wolf that my father got this past summer- there is something amazing about seeing wolves in the wild!

This is a charity close to our hearts! :D
There is a Wolf Sanctuary here in MA, in Ipswich, that we've been supportive of for several years now. (My eldest daughter loves wolves, and has for many years - pre-Twilight even!) It's a wonderful organization because it's not only a sanctuary, but a teaching and breeding facility, too. They have informational programs open to the public, and are part of a network of sanctuaries that will share wolf pups with each other to help keep the packs diversified. They also have an Adopt-A-Wolf program, which allows people to give money to the sanctuary in the name of a particular wolf there (you choose the wolf you're interested in), a gift shop, and a volunteer program for anyone 18 years and older.

If you're interested, here's the link for them: http://www.wolfhollowipswich.org/found.htm

Again -- GREAT choice for this month's Charity!! 8)

Gosh, I kind of hate posting this, but I have spent the past year fighting legislation from radical animal rights groups determined to destroy American agriculture and take away our right to own pets. These two organizations National Wildlife Federation and Defenders of Wildlife are not particularly involved in the latter, but definitely are on an agenda to greatly harm agriculture (which just happens to feed us) and are powerful entities in Washington. From their site they are on the global warming agenda that will destroy American businesses as well. If I had not gotten so deeply involved in the anti dog and cat legislation across this nation this year as a hobby dog breeder, I would be unaware of how powerful some of the warm and fuzzy organizations are and how frightening their true agenda is.

I love wolves. My home is decorated with artwork featuring wolves, I have a friend who worked for years in the Wolf Park. I am sickened by what was done to them so many years ago and the hunting that almost made them extinct. But I can not support radical organizations whose agendas go far beyond doing something for wolves and wildlife. My country will cease to exist as it is if they get their way. That said, if you Google Wolf Sanctuary there are many of them and some probably close to where you live. They all need money to continue to save and care for wolves. I am going to donate to Wolf Park Indiana http://www.wolfpark.org/ as my contribution to wolves for New Moon and TwilightMoms.

Ohhh... found the link to my favorite wolf sanctuary in West Yellowstone. They also take in Grizzleys (hence the website name), and they've created a great little program there. It is one of the places I've donated: http://www.grizzlydiscoveryctr.com/

I love that people are posting other wolf places- some of the smaller ones probably need the money more then the larger groups and its great to get first hand accounts of the work they are doing.

Thank you for your post! I really appreciate it!

We were very hesitant to post about the National Wildlife Federation because of their political agenda so in keeping with the TwilightMOMS rule of not discussing politics (or encouraging political discussions) we want everyone to know that we mentioned this organization only on behalf of the wolves themselves and in no way meant to side with one political agenda or the other.

The purpose of the spotlight was to create an awareness and provide several different ways in which TMs can help save wolves and then we let you decide from there. Thank you so much for providing us with one more way TMs can help this cause.

I just wanted to second what EndlessTwilight said - we posted about these two organizations specifically for their work to protect the wolf population, not for their political views on various issues. So we appreciate you sharing your opinions and for providing information and links to local wolf sanctuaries and charities

What a great way to honor the wolves. I will definitely check out these charities. Everyone's picture are so pretty. What beautiful creatures the wolves are. I'm sure with the release of NM it would increase peoples interests in the wolves.

I'm Team Switzerland but am turning into Team Wolf !!!!

Ava1981 I love how you go every summer to see them - would love to do that. That picture is GREAT.

Thanks- I'm a born and raised Central New Yorker, but my heart is, and always will be, sitting on the banks of the Yellowstone River. Now that I have a better camera, I'm starting to get better wildlife pictures. Already counting the days until I get there next summer (227!)

Hey I have family in Central NY. In fact my son just went up to New Paltz yesterday. Yes NY is pretty but doesn't compare to Wyoming.
