HANA PESTLE

I had the wonderful pleasure of meeting and interviewing Hana Pestle before her show in Kenosha, WI. Hana, a 19 year old singer/songwriter from Montana, caught our eye because of her song Need. Earlier this year, Need was the subject of an internet campaign to get the song on the highly anticipated New Moon Soundtrack (out now). Need is the first song Hana wrote when she was 14 years old and it has evolved over the last few years to the final recorded version. The song is wonderfully haunting and expresses the feelings Bella has in New Moon after Edward leaves. Hana recently created a full length music video for Need. Hana told us how what inspired her to write Need -

"I wrote it when I was about 14 or 15 and my parents didn’t like the boy that I liked. So I wrote it about that whole situation –the impossible love and then over the years the words have changed into other things - the words have changed over the last 5 years" ~ Hana

Hana put out her first CD in September that includes Need and 11 other songs all co-written by Hana, Ben Moody and Michael “Fish” Herring. You can listen to parts of the album as well as several other songs, including Hallelujah, one of her all time favorite songs, on her Myspace Page. The CD is currently available for purchase through her merchandise store, with plans for a wider release in 2010.

Some other tidbits from Hana: Radiohead is one of her all time favorite bands. She really likes the new Paramore CD, and she recently finished Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold in about 6 hours (she really enjoyed it! It's also going to be a movie).

"I'm just a music geek and also movies - I'm obsessed with movies." ~ Hana

Hana will be touring and writing a lot over the next few months. (We'll post her tour information as we get it—more tour dates to come after the first of the year.) She also hopes to have another CD out soon.

Need is the perfect song for New Moon! I love Hana's voice and the song is so wonderfully haunting. Great choice for Artist of the Month!!
